Tomorrow I am off to choose a Christmas tree. Yippee! I don’t know about you but I love a fresh Christmas tree. Year after year we have the great debate in our house , artificial or fresh. Luckily I always coax that one and fresh wins out. We’ll spend hours getting the lights working and putting them on the tree the ‘right’ way , the kids will decorate it and then I’ll redecorate it! But I think there are few things nicer than sitting back, turning the main lights off and just sitting with the Christmas tree lights on and a roaring fire, for me that is when Christmas really begins in our house.
With this fresh and festive thought in mind what is available for green fingered loved ones this time of year. A beautiful gift that would be very welcome in any home I am sure is a fresh centrepiece or wreath. They are festively decorated and the beautiful fragrance will make you feel you are in an alpine forest! The Flower Basket Clonakilty has a vast selection to choose from. Why not pay them a visit , this florist is a treasure trove with beautiful decorations along with an amazing selection of fresh Christmas trees.
I am completely lost when it comes to gardening, everything I touch literally wilts away. Year after year I vow that this will be my year to grow a veggie patch that the family can dip into for fresh lettuce , carrots and herbs. Even if I could keep the window boxes in bloom I would feel a sense of achievement. On top of all that gardening is good for the soul, a recent study found it can improve self esteem, calm anger and ease depression. That alone should have me out digging. However it will never be I think because I wasn’t blessed with my Mum’s green fingers!
So at this time of year what can you get someone with the gardening bug? I spoke with Maria and Matt Collard recently of Future Forests, after 29 years in business I think they may know a thing or two. I would have thought that the gardening year was over but they explained it is in fact the start of the bareroot planting season and the perfect time to put in a new hedgerow, orchard or grove of trees. A lot of these plants have started to arrive from their growers already with Roses and Soft Fruit bushes now in stock and a full range of fruit trees also, all Irish grown may I add.
Future Forests also supply plants for the new Agri Environment Scheme, Glas. This is a boost for both farmers and the horticultural trade. Maria and Matt maintain the importance of these schemes , as the planting & maintaining of hedgerows and trees is vital for our biodiversity. Orchards have also been included in this new scheme. Future Forests have long been advocates of traditional apples and this scheme will hopefully ensure the survival of these old Irish varieties. If you need some advice choosing for a loved one or for your own garden give Maria and Matt a call for some advice, I assure you will be in good hands.
Once the tree is up I’ll post a pic, but not until it is just right. Good luck with your shopping and decorating over the coming weeks.

‘We are delighted we signed up with Local Gift Cards www.givealocalgiftcard.ie and impressed by the number of Gift Vouchers that have been purchased after just a few weeks of signing up, it’s so convenient for both our customers and us, allowing our gift vouchers to be purchased outside of office hours and instantly delivered by email or with a gift card by post, It’s a simple concept that works exceptionally well!’

‘We were first approached by Local Gift Cards in October 2014. They sent us a sample gift card to show us what one of our vouchers would look like. It was even better than the one we sell ourselves. We signed up within the week and our voucher sales have more than doubled since. We had no option to purchase vouchers on our own website, and we felt that we were missing out. We close our business for 4 months of the year and take a holiday over that period. In the past, we would not sell any vouchers over that period as no body would be there to take payment. Now that we are with Give a Local Gift Card, we don’t have to worry about missing a voucher sale as they take care of everything. They have an app that you can connect with your business page to sell vouchers through Facebook. They even send you a list of the vouchers you’ve sold every month. It’s so easy to sign up and the annual fee is unbelievably low. ‘

‘Cinemas can have irregular opening hours which can have an effect when we can sell vouchers. By signing up with Local Gift Cards we are now able to sell vouchers and gift cards 24hours a day. Joining givealocalgiftcard.ie could not have been easier and we were up and running straight away. In movie rating terms they deserve an Oscar for their outstanding performance and helping us provide a better service to our customers!’
